Doll Ridge

Sunday's forecast was calling for 60 degrees, which is A-ok for this time of year here so email started going out on wednesday about getting a ride going in Fort Valley and I was partial for riding Doll Ridge. Doll is the most technical of sections out there and although it is not part of the "Ring," it is on the route for the "Massenutten Rim." With big rock move after big rock move, each needing precision wheel placement, this ride is something of a Baryshnikov ballet, where we brandish our bikes baton styl on the rocks. Dan picked me up early in his new to him Eurovan which gives new the hankering for a new ride, and made the trip listening to the Prince/ Time/ Sheila E mix tape which came with the van. Rumor on the Facebooks was that Sue would be bringing homemade cinnamin buns and I couldnt wait to sink my teefs into one or 4 of those sweet, sticky rolls.

We climbed Bear Wallow and dropped down the backside Figure 8 of Hate style, making a left onto the fireroad. Then we Climbed up the orange blazed trail making a right onto Doll Ridge where we would come from the south. Thing got weirder and weirder as the ride went on. I witnessed a couple riders high- siding and tumbling over the ridge's edge onto the rocks below. Sessioning ensued. Sections were cleaned and others left for another day as the sun had set with still much ground to cover and the ridge. Highlights of the day, other than Sue's sweets, were Paul's indian food explosion in his pack, Collin sticking the new freeride line on Bear Wallow in low light and new hardman, Colin 2.0 hanging on for the full day on his second ever mountain bike ride! Pictures never do this ridge justice. get out there and see for yourself.

Mtn Bikers that don't skate will never see the trail the right way.
